ALMA, Mich. - The Davenport wrestling team tussled with Alma College on Tuesday night in the first dual of the 2018 portion of the season. The teams battled back-and-forth, but in the end it was Davenport capturing a 24-21 win over the Scots. The Panthers picked up their second dual win of the season and had to comeback in the process. The first three matches were all won by Alma as they took a 9-0 lead.
The first match at 125 pounds was a 7-2 decision for Austin Wieczorek over
Caleb Braley. The second match at 133 pounds was a 12-8 decision for Chase Beecher over
Cody Orcutt. The third match at 141 pounds saw Brendan Ladd, who is ranked No. 9 in NCAA Division III, defeat
Jordan Ringler by a 6-0 final.
The tide started to turn at 149 pounds as
Cole Menck pinned Jake Anderson at 6:37 to earn six points.
Tyler Brewer followed that with a pin of his own at 4:05 against Gus Richter at 157 pounds. Alma regained the lead 15-12 after the 165-pound match as Joe Vondrasek pinned
Brandon Dyke at 6:31.
Sam Greco tied the match at 15 with a 5-1 decision over Erik Arnegard at 174 pounds.
The match hinged on the final three matchups and Davenport got six points at 184 pounds as
Kyle Nixon won via forfeit. Wesley Barnes at 197 pounds got a pin against DU's
Jacob Holmes at 4:11 to tie the dual at 21 entering the last match. The heavyweights took the mat with all the pressure on their shoulders. The match was intense with a tie score entering the final two minutes.
Weston DeHaven got the job done for the Panthers late in the match and pulled out a 6-4 decision over Austin Popp to seal the team win.
