KENOSHA, Wis. - The wrestling squad for Davenport University traveled to Parkside on Saturday for the Jim Koch Open. The competition featured 14 different schools and a solid field. The Panthers had a few notable performances.
Jordan Ringler competing at 141 pounds placed sixth. He won by decision (7-3) over Jackson Stauffacher of Augustana (S.D.) in his first match. After a 5-1 loss in the quarterfinals, Ringler rebounded with a tech fall 18-0 win over Jordan Carson of Triton College. He then blanked Francesco Schiro of Parkside, 7-0, to advance to consolation semifinals. Ringler's day ended with a 10-6 defeat against Wisconsin's Jeremy Schoenherr.
Sam Greco placed fourth at 174 pounds for the Panthers. He won by tech fall 17-0 over Killian Jauchh of Wisconsin-Whitewater in his first match. Nathan Vandermeer of Findlay beat Greco at 1:38 by pin in the quarterfinals. Greco battled his way through the consolation rounds with wins over Sam Ryner of Wisconsin-Whitewater (8-4) and Adrian Cervantes of Joliet (8-2). Vandermeer and Greco faced each other again in the third-place match and Vandermeer won 9-2.
Caleb Norris competing at 165 pounds placed sixth. He lost his first match but then won three straight including 1:27 by pin over Uriel Gonzalez of Harper College and 15-0 over Nicolas White of Triton College. Jackson Sweeney of Augustana (S.D.) narrowly won 3-2 over Norris in the consolation semifinals. Dylan Shotwell of Maryville had a 9-4 win over Norris in the fifth-place match.
Asher Meekhof won one match on the day at 133 pounds. He defeated Josh Olson at 5:00 by fall. He fell to Drew Bennett of Northern Iowa and Derek Sharp of Findlay.
Cole Menck at 149 pounds started his day with a 1:32 by fall over Samuel Fletcher of Triton College. He then dropped his next two matches against Nathan Smith of Parkside (7-2) and Justin West of Findlay (11-1).
