Central Michigan Completes Weekend Sweep Over Panthers

7-0 lead halfway through the game sent the Chips on their way to their third win this season

Written by Tyler Kuehl

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The D3 hockey team looked to get off their recent slide, and were going to try to do so against Central Michigan in the second half of the back-to-back. DU was trying to avenge their 11-5 defeat at the hands of the Chippewas on home ice.

Two separate three goal stretches for CMU helped build a big lead through the first half of the game. Davenport was able to score of their own in a row, but they would be able to catch up to the Chips, as the Panthers would go to lose their fifth consecutive game.

QUICK STATS

Final Score: Davenport 4 – Central Michigan 8
Shots: DU 38 | CMU 52
Power Play: DU (1/7) | CMU (1/7)

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES

Tyler Heyboer scored another power play goal, giving him four points on the weekend, while Charlie Bonser led the Panthers with a goal and an assist.

SCORING IN BUNCHES

The game started with Central Michigan continuing to pepper the Davenport goal as they did on Friday night. Shortly before the halfway mark of the opening period, Alex Lasky scored his second goal of the weekend, giving the Chips the 1-0 lead.

Just 47 seconds later, it would be Dalton Sutherland scoring on the power play to put CMU up by two. Over a minute after that, it would Brennan Martin scoring to extend the Chippewas lead. CMU scored those three goals in 1:56.

Brendan Nelson then scored back-to-back goals for the Chips. First, he scored his first of the season fourth of the season with just over a minute left in the first period. His second came 1:45 into the second period.

A little later on Nelson scored his second of the game to put Central Michigan up by six, and the Chips' second three-goal run came within 3:35 of each other.

SIGNS FOR OPTIMISM

Justin McComas scored right before the halfway mark of the period to put Central Michigan up by a 7-0 score, but DU started to put their offense together.

First, Heyboer's power play goal put DU on the board, followed by a goal from Hunter Tolsdorf, with the assist coming from Cole Ott, just 38 seconds later.

A little over six minutes into the third, John Lizyness scored his second of the season to make it a four-goal game. 36 seconds following that score, Bonser tallied his fourth goal in three games to make it a 7-4 game.

Despite the strong effort by the Panthers, a goal by Philip Fazio sealed the game in favor of the home team, as the Chippewas would win by a final score of 8-4.
