Davenport Unable to Get the Bounces Against Ferris State

DU outshoots the Clubdawgs in the second period, but four first period goals put Ferris State well ahead of the Panthers.

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – After sweeping Western Michigan the weekend prior, the D3 hockey team went a little north of town to meet with the Ferris State Clubdawgs. Ferris had only lost twice coming into Friday night, and were ranked #1 in the North Region.

Both teams got opportunities towards goal in the first period, but the home Clubdawgs were able to capitalize in the first period, scoring four goals. Davenport could not convert on their three power play chances in the second period, much thanks to Ferris' goaltender, who held the Panthers off the board for the majority of the contest, helping the 'Dawgs extend their already impressive winning streak.

QUICK STATS

Final Score: Davenport 1 – Ferris State 7
Shots: DU 30 | FSU 42
Power Play: DU (1/5) | FSU (0/1)
Records: DU (7-8, 5-6) | #1 FSU (12-2, 8-2)

SLOBBERIN' DAWGS

The Clubdawgs came out flying with chances in the opening minutes of the contest. Just over three minutes in, Michael Barnes found Miles Barnes open in the slot, and he scored his first goal as a Clubdawg, putting Ferris State in front. Three minutes later, Nathan Rieman was loose at the side of the DU goal, found a pass from Nick Cloud, and drove around the DU defense, around Tafel, and slid the puck into the back of the net to make it 2-0 Clubdawgs.

POWER BLAST

Just passed the halfway mark of the period, Davenport would get an opportunity on the power play. With only a few seconds left on the man advantage, Thomas Chaulk fed a pass across to Marcus Chartrand, who then blasted a one-timer by the glove of Ferris' Bryson Stutesman for his second goal in as many games to bring DU back within one.

GIVING AND GOING

Late in the first, Ferris would extend their lead once again. First, Cloud and Lance McLean hooked up for a pretty goal to put the Clubdawgs back up by two. With a little over 90 seconds to play in the period, Quinn Jedd put a pass towards the slot that somehow found its way through everybody and found Matt Medonis open on the back door, and he easily tapped in his sixth of the season to send Ferris to the first intermission with a 4-1 lead.

NOT FEELING THE POWER

In the second period, DU would get three power play opportunities. They would garner a plethora of shots, but Stutesman was exceptional, not allowing the Panthers to convert.

The Clubdawgs would be able to find the back of the net, despite being down a man. Michael Barnes blocked a Christopher Heath clear, and brought the puck into the Panther zone. He took a shot that Tafel stopped, however Zach Peters banged in the rebound to make it a 5-1 game.

The Clubdawgs would limit the Panthers chances in the third period and the Clubdawgs would put the game away. Reiman would score his second of the game after Tafel got caught out of the goal early in final frame, and Michael Barnes would score minutes later, and Ferris would extend their winning streak to 10 after picking up the 7-1 win.

WHO'S NEXT?

The Panthers and Clubdawgs will meet again Saturday afternoon back in Grand Rapids. Puck drop at Patterson is set for 3:30 p.m.
