DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Davenport baseball team had committed just two errors in building a 5-0 record, but defense was the reason the Panthers took their first loss on Monday night at Embry-Riddle. The Panthers took a one-run lead heading into the bottom of the ninth and gave up an unearned run. They also led again by one run heading into the bottom of the 11th, but two errors including a throw away with two outs allowed the winning run to score in a 6-5 loss to the Eagles.

Cal Djuraskovic got the start for DU after winning GLIAC Pitcher of the Week last Monday. He followed a strong start with another solid effort going five innings in a no-decision. He allowed five hits, three runs, two walks and struck out six. Evan Maize had a great relief appearance finishing the game on the mound. He went 5.2 innings and allowed just two hits and no earned runs. Maize walked one and fanned four but took the loss (0-1).

Davenport trailed 2-1 after one inning as Jacob Buchberger had a RBI groundout for DU. The Panthers scored twice in the second inning to take a 3-2 lead. Travis Harvey walked to lead off and took third on a failed pickoff. He then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Jimmy Filipski walked and Kamrin Markwardt did the same as Max Clark got the hook for the Eagles and was replaced by Garrett Goodall. Gaetano Vallone greeted Goodall with a RBI double down the right field line for the 3-2 lead.

Embry-Riddle tied the game in the third on three hits as Kyle Marsh's infield single plated the tying run. Davenport regained the lead with a run in the sixth. Harvey tripled to right center with one out and Hunter Ruhstorfer lifted a sacrifice fly to center for the 4-3 lead.

Maize pitched with the lead until the bottom of the ninth. The Eagles started the inning reaching by error and then miscommunication led a sacrifice bunt to move that runner from first all the way to third with one out. The infield came in and Luis Olivier hit a chopper just past Maize on the mound. Alex Huard charged and looked the runner back briefly but throwing out Olivier at first. Kyle Guttveg broke for home on the throw to first and slid home safely to tie it up.

Both teams went down in order in the 10th inning. Buchberger led off the top of the 11th with a double to left center. He took third on a passed ball and with one out, Harvey laced a pitch the other way into left field for the 5-4 lead. Maize struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the 11th. Guttveg reached on an error by Buchberger and John Devine made the most of it with a double to left to tie the game. Olivier hit a grounder to third base and the throw went over the head of first baseman Noah Marcoux to score Devine from second with the winning run.

Buchberger and Harvey each had two hits and drove in a run. DU had just six hits for the game against three Eagle hurlers. Troy Naab got the win for Embry-Riddle going the final four innings and allowing just two hits with five punchouts. The Panthers are back at it again tomorrow with a trip to Eckerd College for a 6 p.m. first pitch in St. Petersburg.
