HUDSONVILLE, Mich. – After dropping a tough game against one of the best in the region, the D3 hockey team drove a hair west for a second meeting with Grand Valley State. With the win over DU on Friday night, the Lakers had won 10 consecutive meetings against the Panthers.
The teams traded goals in the opening 20 minutes, as the Panthers showed that they were not going to let the Lakers sweep the weekend that easily. However, four unanswered goals by GVSU put the Panthers too far behind for any comeback, and the Lakers would complete the weekend sweep.
QUICK STATS
Final Score: Davenport 5 – Grand Valley State 8
Power Play: DU (1/4) | GVSU (1/4)
Records: DU (7-13, 5-11) | #5 GVSU (19-4, 13-2)
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
Tyler Heyboer led the Panthers with a goal and three assists Saturday night, along with
Charlie Bonser and
Christopher Heath each picking up a pair of assists for the Panthers.
TRADING BLOWS
Unlike Friday night, the first goal of the game came early in the first period as James Balwdin scored his fifth of the season just over three minutes in. The Panthers would answer right back with goal from
Marcus Chartrand a little over three minutes later.
Late in the period, the Lakers would take the lead back as Mitchell Lawton potted his 10
th of the season with a little over a minute to play. In the dying seconds of the period,
Parker Schmitt was able to score his second of the year, and the teams were knotted at two heading into the break.
Grand Valley would take their third lead of the game early in the second period following a goal from Tim Baldwin, but Davenport would respond just after the halfway mark of the period. Heyboer scored his 17
th goal of the season, on the power play, and the game was three all.
A VALLEY TOO LOW
The Lakers would take over from there, however. Captain Ben Kowalske and James Baldwin scored just over a minute apart late in the frame to put GVSU up by two. With only 43 seconds left in the period, Trevor Lassaline scored his 12
th of the season to send the Lakers into the third period with a 6-3 lead.
Lassaline would scored with a little over eight minutes left in regulation, but the Panthers would answer back with goals from
Alexander Brown and
Aiden Dion, but it was too little, too late. Kowalske would score his second of the game in the final 20 seconds of the game, and Grand Valley would win their 11
th consecutive game against the Panthers by a final score of 8-5.
WHO'S NEXT?
Davenport continues to grind through their MCHC schedule, and will prepare to Indiana Tech next weekend. The Warriors are currently 3-13-1 this season, and had just played Western Michigan on Saturday night.
Indiana Tech has won six of the seven meetings against the Panthers, with DU's lone win coming in the first round of the MCHC West Playoffs back in 2018. The first game of the weekend will take place at the Parkview Icehouse in Fort Wayne, Indiana on the 24
th. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.
