Pompon Team Prepares for High Kick Championships

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport Pompon team has begun preparing for the Mid American Pompon High Kick Championship. This year marks the fourth season DU Pompon will compete at High Kick and with the largest roster in program history, they are working hard to set a new precedent. Each year the team prepares a themed routine to present. It may contain costumes, props, back drops and is composed mostly of kicking throughout the routine. The routines showcased are typically very theatrical. They are judged on their creativity, kick form, number of unison kicks completed as a team and showmanship. No poms are used in this routine.

In the spirit of tradition each team that competes keeps their theme a secret until competition day. This tradition adds to the fun on competition day and invites a sense of anticipation that can't be matched in other competitions. If you'd like to catch Davenport Pompon's routine be sure to attend and sport your DU spirit.

"This team is working harder than ever. Our theme is eye catching, exciting and full of a ton of little prop surprises. The routine we are preparing really showcases the team as a whole but it also gives some of our athletes from a non-traditional pompon background to reveal a lot of their unique abilities. High kick is really the best at allowing teams to reach outside their comfort zones and pull from other genres of pom, dance, drill and even theater. We are excited to compete and showcase this amazing group of pommers and to see our friends in the pompon community's routines."- Head Coach Erin Engeseth.

This year marks Mid American Pompon's High Kick Championship 31st annual competition. For over 30 years traditional pompon teams across the state have gathered for the day to present their hip-hop and novelty themed kick routines. It is a day for teams to get creative with choreography and step outside the norm when it comes to traditional pompon. Many teams come prepared for a very theatrical performance and compete against each other in their division. The event takes place November 7th at the Dow Event Center in Saginaw, Michigan.
