Box Score QUINCY, Ill. - Round one of a weekend series between two of the best teams in the region went to Quincy 10-2 behind an offense that delivered four homers, two triples and one double in a 10-hit attack against the Panthers.
It was the season opener for the Hawks but they played like they were in mid-season form with the bats. Gino D'Alessio got the Hawks on the board in the first at-bat of the season with a leadoff homer to left off DU starter
James Rogers.
Travis Harvey had a leadoff double in the top of the second and took third on a wild pitch with one out. He was stranded on third however after a pair of strikeouts as Riley Martin was dealing for the Hawks.
The Panthers had another chance to get on the board in the third with two outs as
Nolan Anspaugh walked and stole second.
Nolan Bryant also walked but a
Noah Marcoux groundout ended the threat. The fourth inning is really where things could have turned in favor of Davenport. The Panthers got a leadoff single by Harvey and then
Carson Eby and
Christian Petre had back-to-back singles with one out to load the bases. Martin buckled down however and got a strikeout and fielder's choice to keep it 1-0.
The Hawks then took advantage and increased their lead to 3-0 with two outs as Jacob Kalusniak tripled home a pair to left center. Rogers exited the mound and then
James Kohl got the final out of the fourth.
Joseph Drury pitched a clean fifth inning for the Panthers but then gave up a leadoff homer to Justin Eads to begin the sixth.Â
Martin was starting to run out of gas in the seventh when Davenport cut the deficit in half.
Kamrin Markwardt singled to start the inning and Anspaugh had an infield single to put runners on first and second.
Noah Marcoux with two down smacked a double to center to score both runners and now it was 4-2. The Hawks again got runs right back as Dayson Croes led off the seventh with a homer to left center and a 5-2 lead.
Zach Haefer wiggled out of any more trouble when he relieved Drury in the seventh. Davenport stranded two runners in the eighth and then the game blew open in the bottom half as Quincy scored five more times. D'Alessio tripled home a run and then Nolan Wosman hit a two-run blast for an 8-2 lead. Eric Tipton concluded the scoring with a two-run off
Max Swan for the Panthers.
Each hit had 10 hits but the Hawks had the extra base hits in the clutch. Rogers took the loss in 3.2 innings and allowed two hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Martin got the victory for Quincy going seven innings with two walks and 11 strikeouts. DU falls to 2-2 overall and Quincy is now 1-0. The same two teams battle in a doubleheader tomorrow.
