KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Davenport men's lacrosse team opened the 2022 season at 19th-ranked Rockhurst on Friday in a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup. The Hawks already had a game under their belt with a 21-9 victory on Saturday, Feb. 5 against Quincy in a non-conference game. It proved to be a factor as they showed why they are one of the top teams in NCAA Division II. Rockhurst came out red-hot and scored the first 11 goals of the game. The Hawks led 6-0 after the first quarter and Davenport was finally able to put one on the board at the 7:22 mark of the second quarter.
Jordan Caskenette had the unassisted goal.
The Panthers found some rhythm after that and finished the game with a 6-3 edge in scoring the rest of the way.
Dylan Day scored his first goal as a Panther at 12:51 of the third quarter from
James Johnston.
Austin Thompson scored at 4:23 of the third quarter from
Adam Smellie. Day got his second of the game at 3:18 of the third unassisted. DU trailed 14-3 heading into the fourth quarter when Caskenette scored back-to-back goals. Smellie added the team's last goal at 2:22 of the fourth.
The final shot totals favored Rockhurst 45-32 and the Hawks also had a 27-20 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams made 13 saves as
Daniel Milano did his thing for the Panthers. Jack Vande Ven led the Hawks with four goals on five shots on goal. Zach Cegielski controlled 14-of-26 face-offs for Rockhurst.
Lucas Renzetti had a good day in the face-off circle going 12-of-24.
Trent Eichbauer led the team with eight groundballs.
Andy Trapp caused two turnovers and had one groundball.
