Softball Drops a Pair to Open Spring Break

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Davenport University softball team faced Bridgeport (first-ever meeting) and Findlay on Sunday for day one of the spring break trip to the Sunshine State. However, the Panthers dropped both games with scores of 6-2 and 0-1, respectively, to fall to 2-4 on the young season. Next up on Monday, DU will go up against Fairmont State (10 a.m.) and Holy Family (2:30 p.m.), both of which will also be for the first time ever.

In the first game of the day, Bridgeport struck first with a run in the first and two more in the fourth. In the home half of that fourth inning, Davenport's Rachel Griffin hit a two-run homerun, her first of the season, to cut the deficit to one run, 3-2. However, the Purple Knights padded their lead with two more runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to make it 6-2 like the final score.

Ellie Muilenburg (0-3) lasted six innings with six earned runs given up on nine hits to go with three walks and four strikeouts. In relief, Elise Magnus pitched the final frame with just one free pass allowed.

In the nightcap, Emma Miller (2-1) was brilliant once again as she gave up just one earned run on four hits in six innings of work to go with no walks and a punchout. Through 20 frames pitched in 2022, the defending GLIAC Pitcher of the Week's ERA is just 1.05 with a batting average against of only .211.

Findlay scored its one run in the bottom of the fourth when Megan Demler singled in Avery Shepherd from second following Shepherd's leadoff double.
