SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The women's basketball team had the ball for one final shot in overtime on Saturday, but could not get a shot off as the horn sounded in a 65-64 loss at Lake Superior State. The Panthers called a timeout with five seconds left in overtime and inbounded by their bench in the frontcourt.
Toni Grace drove to the baseline but could not get a shot off and passed it as time expired. Grace forced overtime on a three-pointer with 25 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 57. The Panthers got a stop with three seconds left but could not get a shot off after a timeout.
Lake Superior State avenged a loss in Grand Rapids on Monday improving to 3-14 overall and 2-9 in the GLIAC. Davenport falls to 2-20 overall and 1-13 in the conference with six games left in the season.
Grace paced the Panthers with 24 points going 8-of-19 from the floor and 7-of-11 at the foul line. She hit the 20-point mark for the third time in her last six games and also had three rebounds and three assists.
Scout Nelson scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds. Davenport took great care of the ball with just eight turnovers and held a 18-2 edge in points off turnovers for the game.
Mattison Rayman had 11 points and 20 rebounds (most by an opponent this season) for the Lakers. Makenzie Bray led all scorers with 27 points on 8-of-13 shooting and 8-of-10 at the foul line. Davenport led for 36:52 of the game and there were six ties and six lead changes.
