GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Under a heavy rain on Wednesday night, the goals were pouring into the net from both sides. However, the visiting Hope College Flying Dutchmen found the net seven more times than the Davenport men's lacrosse team in a 17-10 victory for the NCAA Division III program. Hope (8-2) handed the Panthers their second straight home loss and Davenport evened their record at 5-5 in their final non-conference game of the season. The Panthers will now embark on a tough three-game stretch to end the regular season including two more home games against top 10 teams in Indianapolis and Lindenwood.
Hope really controlled the tempo throughout the game and never trailed. The Panthers tied the game three times at 1-1, 5-5 and 6-6. The latter happened with 3:54 left in the second quarter. After that point, Hope would change the game by scoring six straight goals with the last one happening with 10:58 left in the third quarter for a 12-6 lead.
The Panthers were not able to cut the deficit to less than five goals for the remainder of the contest. It was the first loss in the series history against Hope. The previous meetings were when Davenport competed as a club program in the MCLA.
Zach Wiggins increased his season total to 33 goals by scoring six times for Hope. He had two goals in the first quarter, one in the second quarter, and three more in the third quarter.
Jordan Caskenette scored a season-high five times with one in the first, two in the second, one in the third, and one in the fourth. Hope finished with 47 shots including 24 on goal. Davenport had 26 shots including 19 on goal. Davenport was hurt by 21 turnovers and it was the eighth game this season of 20-plus turnovers.
Hope was able to win 17-of-29 in the faceoff area as Cole Scheffler won all of those for Hope.
Lucas Renzetti won 11 faceoffs for the Panthers in 27 attempts.
Trent Eichbauer recorded six groundballs and caused one turnover.
Dylan Day scored a pair of goals and finished with four shots on goal.
James Johnston was limited to one goal and also had two assists.
Andy Trapp recorded six groundballs and also had one assist and two caused turnovers.
Daniel Milano made a season-low seven saves for the Panthers in the loss. It was the first time all season that Milano did not have double-digit saves in a game.
