Softball Sweeps Ferris State, Koza Brings in 10

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport picked up its fourth doubleheader sweep of the season and second in GLIAC play on Friday afternoon taking care of business at Ferris State thanks to scores of 8-3 and 6-3. Next up, the Panthers will look to take both from Northwood for the second time this spring with a noon first pitch on Saturday in Midland.

Davenport (15-17, 7-7 GLIAC) has won three games in a row for the third time this season while Ferris State (12-23, 3-9 GLIAC) has been on the wrong end of things in 13 of its last 16 outings.

Playing without one of the hottest hitters in the league in third baseman, Rachel Griffin, the Panthers were paced by catcher, Alexis Koza, and her scorching hot bat. For the day, Koza went 6-for-8 (4-for-4 in game two) with three runs scored, 10 driven in (six in game one), two extra-base hits (three-run homerun in game one), and a walk. The senior backstop has now racked up 15 RBI in her last three games, just five fewer than she had in the prior 27 games combined, and leads the conference in that category with 35.

Davenport's game-one starter, Emma Miller (9-8), climbed back above the .500 mark with three earned runs given up on nine hits, three walks and two strikeouts. With that effort, Miller earned the victory in back-to-back outings for the first time since March 1.

In the nightcap, the Panthers put up five runs before the Bulldogs could get on the board and Ellie Muilenburg took care of business in the circle. Like her predecessor, Muilenburg (6-9)  allowed three earned runs on seven hits with three free passes and 10 punchouts, her second appearance with 10 or more this season.
