Softball Pulls Off Senior Day Sweep of Wayne State

CALEDONIA, Mich. - On a day in which the program honored its six seniors for the 2022 season, the Davenport softball team pushed its winning streak to four games for the first time this spring. The Panthers scored four runs in both games and captured the sweep thanks to scores of 4-3 and 4-1 on Sunday at The Farm.

Davenport moved back to the .500 mark overall at 20-20 and two games above it in GLIAC play (12-10) for the first time since elevating to 3-1 back on April 3. On the other side, Wayne State (13-27, 6-16 GLIAC) has dropped eight games in a row and 14 of its last 15.

In game one, the Panthers struck first in the opening frame when Riley Hasseld (3-for-4, 2 RBI) doubled down the left field line scoring Gabby Palazzolo (2-for-3, 2 R, 1 BB). Two innings later, Ellie Muilenburg helped herself with a two-run home run to center field giving the senior back-to-back games with a round tripper, something she'd never done before. In the fourth, Hasseld was at it again as she brought in Palazzolo all the way from first base with her first career triple.

The Warriors cut the deficit to one, 4-3, with a three spot in the top of the sixth, but the home team was able to hold them off for a third win in a row.

In her 53rd career complete game, Muilenburg (9-10) gave up three runs, just one earned, on seven hits with only two walks and six strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Wayne State was first on the board with a 1-0 lead in the second following an RBI single to center. Davenport responded with a big fifth frame in which Lindsay Goodman, Palazzolo (2-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI) and Alexis Koza each tallied an RBI before Rachel Griffin reached on a fielding error by the third baseman allowing Palazzolo to come in.

Emma Miller (11-10) moved back above the .500 mark with her 30th career complete game. Miller surrendered one earned run on six hits with no free passes and two punchouts. The left-hander has now pitched without allowing a walk in three of her last four outings and in 13 total appearances this season.

Prior to game one, the six seniors honored included Muilenburg, Griffin, Koza, Rylie Kalina, Anelise Worden, and Alyssa MacTrinder.
