CALEDONIA, Mich. - After losing by way of the run rule, 11-3, in five innings to Ferris State in game one, Davenport bounced back nicely in the nightcap with a 6-2 win and salvaged the Sunday split. Next up on the schedule, the Panthers will be at Hillsdale for a pair of games on Monday with the first pitch in game one scheduled for 3 p.m.
With the split, Davenport now sits at 11-9 overall and 3-1 in GLIAC play while Ferris State is 11-18 on the season including 2-4 in league games. The Bulldogs' win in game one snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Panthers in the all-time series that DU leads by nine, 14-5.
In game one,
Emma Miller (6-4) was touched up for just the second time this season as she lasted only 2.2 innings with six earned runs given up on six hits. Miller struck out three Bulldog batters, but walked two (only her second outing with multiple walks this season) and gave up her first home run of the spring.
In two and a third frames of relief,
Taylor Simon surrendered five earned runs on five hits with no free passes and two punchouts.
Ellie Muilenburg (5-5) climbed back to the .500 mark with the victory in game two as she used 111 pitches, 72 of which were strikes, to go the distance. Muilenburg allowed two earned runs on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts, her fourth-straight start with seven or more.
At the dish, the right-hander helped herself with a two-run homer to left-center field in the second inning. That same frame,
Monica Meger made it 3-0, Davenport, with an RBI single to center that scored
Lindsay Goodman. In the third, the Panthers increased their advantage to four when
Rylie Kalina singled in
Rachel Griffin.
After Ferris State scored their only two runs in the fourth and fifth innings, Griffin and
Alexis Koza went back to back in the home half of the fifth to add some insurance for the Panthers.
