Softball Drops a Pair to No. 24 Grand Valley State

CALEDONIA, Mich. - No. 24 Grand Valley State came into Tuesday's doubleheader at Davenport with a team ERA of 2.17 and pitched like it against the Panthers. The Lakers gave up just two runs total, both of which came in game two, on eight hits to sweep the home team with scores of 2-0 and 6-2. Next up for DU is a doubleheader at Hillsdale on Thursday with the first pitch in game one scheduled for 3 p.m. against the Chargers.

Davenport now sits at 11-11 overall and 3-3 in GLIAC play while Grand Valley State improved to 21-4 on the season including 6-2 in league games.

Davenport's game-one starter, Emma Miller (6-5), dropped her second-straight start for the first time this season, but handled her own despite taking the loss. Miller gave up just two runs, only one earned, on eight hits with three walks (season high) and one strikeout. On the other side, Hannah Beatus (10-1) was brilliant with just three hits surrendered, one free pass and seven punchouts while facing only two batters more than the minimum.

Grand Valley State scored both of its runs in the fifth inning when Cirrincione tripled to left field scoring Koenigshof from third and came around to score herself after a throwing error during the same play.

In the nightcap, Ellie Muilenburg (5-6) allowed six earned runs on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts, snapping her streak of four outings with seven or more strikeouts. Genesis Eggart (6-1) handled her own on the other side with two earned runs, five hits, four free passes, and three punchouts.

Offensively, Davenport pushed across one run in the first and another in the seventh. Rachel Griffin (pictured), who went 3-for-6 on the day, scored Gabby Palazzolo with a sacrifice fly in the first before Palazzolo singled in Lindsay Goodman six frames later.
