Softball Suffers Sweep at Hillsdale, 6-4 and 2-1

HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Davenport University softball team led Hillsdale through four and half innings of both games on Thursday afternoon at Johnny Williams Field, 4-0 and 1-0. However, the host Chargers scored six runs in the sixth inning of game one and two runs in the fifth frame of the nightcap to sweep the Panthers with scores of 6-4 and 2-1, respectively.

Davenport (11-13) has dropped four games in a row for the first time this season while Hillsdale (17-17) has won three in a row and seven of its last eight. Next up for the Panthers is a trip to Detroit and Wayne State on Saturday for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.

In game one, Davenport scored all four of its runs in the top of the fifth inning. Gabby Palazzolo singled in Alexis Cardona, Monica Meger scored on a wild pitch, Palazzolo also came around on a wild pitch, and Rachel Griffin doubled in Riley Hasseld. Fast forward to the bottom of the sixth when Hillsdale scored six runs on seven hits to take the lead for good.

In her 56th appearance as a Panther, Emma Miller (6-6) took the loss in a third-straight outing for the first time in her career. Miller gave up six runs, five earned, on 11 hits (seven in just the sixth inning) with no walks and one strikeout.

In game two, Alexis Koza put the Panthers ahead with an RBI single in the top of the first that scored Palazzolo. Neither team would score again until the bottom of the fifth when Hillsdale went on top because of a two-run double down the left-field line.

Ellie Muilenburg (5-7) surrendered two earned runs on seven hits with four free passes and eight punchouts.
