DETROIT - The all-time series between Davenport and Wayne State remains tied (8-8) after the Panthers took one of two from the Warriors on Saturday afternoon. DU was victorious in game one, 6-2, before falling in the nightcap, 9-6. Next up for Davenport is a home doubleheader against Saginaw Valley State on Sunday beginning at 12 p.m. at The Farm. Originally scheduled to be at SVSU, the Cardinals will act as the home team.
Davenport now sits at 12-14 on the season including 4-4 in GLIAC play while Wayne State is 11-13 overall and 4-2 in league action.
In game one on Saturday,
Emma Miller (7-6) was back to her old ways as she went the distance and gave up just two earned runs with no walks and a pair of strikeouts. With that being said, Miller played with fire all day as Wayne State racked up 11 hits and stranded nine baserunners. The Warriors notched eight hits in the first six innings, but didn't score a run until one out had been recorded in the bottom of the seventh.
Offensively for the Panthers,
Rachel Griffin had a big doubleheader as she finished with four hits in her seven at-bats, two runs scored, seven RBI, and a three-run homerun in game one.
Gabby Palazzolo (2-for-3, 2 R, 1 RBI) and
Riley Hasseld (2-for-4, 1 R) both registered a multi-hit effort in game one before
Alexis Koza (3-for-4, 1 RBI) followed suit in the nightcap.
In that second game, Wayne State scored first with a run in the third before Davenport took a 3-1 lead heading to the bottom of the fifth. In the fourth,
Rylie Kalina singled in
Ellie Muilenburg, and in the fifth, Palazzolo scored on a wild pitch before Griffin doubled in Hasseld.
However, the Warriors proceeded to put up a five spot in the home half of the fifth before adding three more runs in the sixth to take a six-run advantage, 9-3. The Panthers made it interesting in the seventh when Griffin doubled in a pair and Koza singled in another, but that would be it for the scoring.
Muilenburg (5-8) surrendered nine runs, seven earned, on 11 hits with two free passes and seven punchouts. She was pulled after 5.2 innings before
Elise Magnus retired Wayne State's final batter with a groundout to Palazzolo at second.
