ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Davenport men's lacrosse team ran into a tough first quarter and then played Maryville even for the final three quarters in a 17-12 loss on Saturday in GLVC competition. For the Panthers it was their final road game of the regular season and they will wrap up the regular season next Saturday with a 1:00 PM game against Lindenwood on Senior Day.
Maryville led 6-1 after the first quarter and then each team scored 11 goals in the last three quarters.
James Johnston had the game's first goal at 12:27 which was his 26th of the season. Maryville then rattled off the next six goals as Zach Baker scored twice for the Saints and assisted on another goal.
Dylan Day scored the first goal of the second quarter at 10:45 from
Adam Smellie to make it 6-2. After a Joel Lucas goal for the Saints,
Keelan McKouen scored unassisted at 5:24 for the 7-3 deficit. DU trailed 8-3 at halftime after Tyler Wenck scored a man-up goal at 1:17.
The Panthers scored back-to-back goals early in the third quarter coming from Day and Johnston to make it 9-5. The Saints scored the next two goals to increase their lead to 11-5 at the 10:20 mark. The closest DU would get is four goals at 11-7 after a goal by Day and
Jordan Caskenette with a man up at 7:02 in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter,
Trey Zelinski scored at 9:43 followed by goals from Johnston, Renzetti, and Caskenette.
Maryville outshot the Panthers, 49-39, and
Daniel Milano had a very solid game with a season-high 17 saves in net for Davenport. Johnston finished with four goals on six shots on goal. Day had three goals on three shots on goal. Renzetti had two groundballs and won 15-of-30 in the faceoff area. There were a bevy of penalties as Maryville went 3-of-8 and Davenport 2-of-6 in extra-man opportunities.
