The Davenport ACHA Division III hockey team had a home-and-home weekend series against top-ranked Hope College in their first action of the winter semester. Friday night's affair was on the road in Holland with the Flying Dutchmen claiming a 7-3 win. The two teams met at Patterson Ice Center the next day with Hope winning 11-2 over the Panthers. Hope improved to 18-1 overall with the pair of wins while the Panthers saw their record fall to 4-15.
Davenport found the back of the net three times on Friday at Hope which was impressive in the fact that they had just seven shots on goal. The Flying Dutchmen conceded the first goal at 7:07 as
Liam Simerson scored his sixth goal of the season for DU from
Joe Seidel and
Kevin Crawley. That lead would last just 52 seconds however as Nolan Holtrop scored his 15th goal of the season to tie it up. Hope would close out the period on the power play goal by Lucas Barber from Kevin Healy and Ian MacDonald.
The Flying Dutchmen increased their lead to 3-1 at 4:38 of the second period as Austin Ieuter scored his fifth goal of the season. Davenport fought back to tie it at 3 with goals by Crawley at 4:58 and
Aiden Dion at 5:02. This was a monumental rally since Davenport had lost 17 in a row to Hope entering the game. Hope buckled down on defense and scored the next four goals to end the second period and take the win 7-3.
Davenport was in a similar situation on Saturday as they were tied at 2 early in the second period.
John Lizyness scored his fifth of the season at 17:25 of the first period and
Caleb Baker notched his first of the season 51 seconds into the second period on the power play. Hope would then go on to score nine straight goals spanning the second and third periods to cruise to the 11-2 win. Jacob Adams had back-to-back goals in the second period to make it 4-2. Holtop scored back-to-back to end the second period with an 8-2 lead.
Barber got his 15th goal of the season at 1:49 of the third period followed by Hunter Maschke with two goals at 11:12 and 19:36 to end the scoring.
Barrett Rosser (16 saves) and
Cameron Griep (12 saves) split time in net for Davenport.
