HOUGHTON, Mich. - The SDC Gym can be a very intimidating place to play, especially for freshmen, but
Claire Gregwer had her best game as a collegiate player on Thursday night in a 76-58 loss at Michigan Tech (15-3, 7-1 GLIAC). She finished with her second double-double of the season and first on the road with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Gregwer tied her season high in points and set her season high in rebounds by a margin of five after 10 rebounds against Hillsdale. She went 5-of-10 from the floor and 4-of-6 at the free throw line.
Michigan Tech led for 32:08 of game time compared to 4:39 for the Panthers (7-11, 1-7 GLIAC). Davenport led 9-4 in the first quarter after a
Lillee Gustafson layup but that would be their largest lead of the game. Leading 11-9 at the 3:16 mark, the Panthers would be outscored 9-1 for the rest of the quarter to trail 18-12.
Davenport was stuck on 12 points until a jumper by
Jaci Walker with 6:19 left in the second quarter and the Huskies built their lead to 25-14. Michigan Tech led 37-24 at halftime. MTU shot 46.4 percent from the floor and were 6-of-14 from behind the arc. DU shot 37.9 percent from the floor and were 1-of-9 from behind the arc.
The Panthers came out on a mission in the third quarter and cut the 13-point halftime deficit to 39-33 at the 7:09 mark on an
Alexa Kolnitys triple for her first points of the game. The lead for MTU was again six points (45-39) just two minutes later after a pair of Gregwer free throws. The Huskies increased their lead to 55-44 at the end of the third quarter.
Davenport battled back again and this time to five points (55-50) with 8:20 left in the game after a
Scout Nelson triple which gave her 12 points. Michigan Tech would go on a 9-1 run over the next three minutes to lead by 13 with 5:25 to go. The lead would stay at double figures and grow to 20 at 76-56 with 21 seconds left. Gregwer scored her 13th and 14th point in the paint with three seconds left for the final margin of 76-58.
Michigan Tech outscored the Panthers 39-34 in the second half as DU shot 38.7 percent from the floor and improved to 5-of-13 from behind the arc. The Huskies continued to shoot well from deep going 6-of-12 in the final 20 minutes. Nelson finished with 12 points, three rebounds, three assists, and two blocks.
Makenna Bryant added 10 points off the bench with 26-plus minutes and made two triples in seven attempts. Gustafson scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds. Alex Rondorf led the Huskies with 21 points and also posted a double-double with 11 rebounds.
