Panthers start cold in 67-47 loss to Missouri-St. Louis

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport women's basketball team got off to a slow start in the first quarter and could not recover in a 67-47 loss to Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers fall to 0-2 overall this season and could not find an offensive rhythm going 3-of-14 in the first quarter. UMSL did their part to distance themselves in the opening 10 minutes by shooting 8-of-11 in the quarter including 3-of-3 from behind the arc. The Panthers were staring down a 23-9 deficit heading into the second quarter.

The Tritons increased their lead in the second quarter and led 40-20 at halftime. The Triton lead remained at double figures in the third quarter going into the fourth quarter with a 51-33 advantage. The lead would grow to 62-33 at the 4:52 mark of the final quarter. The teams played even in the second half with each scoring 27 points. Davenport would shoot better each quarter and finished 18-of-53 for 34 percent. The Tritons finished 24-of-52 for 46.2 percent. Both teams canned five triples for the game. Davenport had more points off turnovers for the second straight game with a 12-9 edge. Both teams would finish with 24 points in the paint. Lillee Gustafson finished with 11 points and eight rebounds, to lead the team in both categories. Alexa Kolnitys finished with eight points, three assists, and three steals in 35 minutes and did not commit a turnover. Isabel Lindo also scored eight points and made two of her four three-point attempts.

Davenport will be back at the Student Center on Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 14) with a 3 PM tip against Walsh. It will be the second meeting between the teams, but the first since March 14, 2011 when the Panthers won 68-55 in the NAIA Tournament.
