Panthers put up strong showing in Ben McMullen Open

MUSKEGON, Mich. - The Davenport University wrestling team had a promising start to their season in the Ben McMullen Open as the Panthers placed in the top 10 in multiple team and individual categories.

Crue Cooper and Darrin Alward led the way as the top finishers in their brackets for DU, the pair finishing fourth overall at 197 and 174 respectively. Cooper lost by fall at 3:22 to Jase Grundy of Mott Community College and Alward lost a 4-2 decision to William Vernier of Alma College.

As a team, the Panthers were at the top of the leaderboards in several categories: fifth in most pins/tech falls (17, 50:36), sixth in winning percentage (41 wins, 30 losses), fourth in total match points (381), and third in most tech by falls (eight, 32:50).

Individually, Dustin Mallory was fourth for total match points (56), Roan Cooper was T-third for highest single match points (23), Lucas Nagle and Cooper were fourth and fifth for fastest tech falls at 2:38 and 2:43 respectively, and Raymond Van Dyke was tallied the second-fastest win by fall at 0:14.
