Rough first inning the difference in 10-7 loss at Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Davenport baseball team played game one of a big regional three-game series at Indianapolis on Friday. The Greyhounds remained undefeated (9-0) with a 10-7 win over the Panthers (5-10) in chilly conditions. The story in this one boiled down to a rough first inning in which UIndy scored five times with two outs and were aided by an error with two outs that opened the floodgates. After the error, the Greyhounds took advantage as Nick Lukac had a RBI double and Jared Bujdos hit a two-run home run.

Davenport would score the next two runs as Logan Hylek scored on a passed ball and Gaetano Vallone hit a RBI double with two outs, both in the second inning. The Greyhounds extended their lead to 9-2 with two runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Drew Donaldson had a RBI triple in the fourth inning and finished 4-for-5 at the dish. Isaac Bair had a two-run scoring single in the fifth inning.

Josh Robinson was used as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning for Davenport and immediately delivered with a two-run scoring double which plated Carter Troncin and Coltrane Rubner. Robinson helped spark the offense as Vallone followed with a two-RBI single up the middle to make it 9-6.

Davenport got within 9-7 with a run in the eighth as Robinson homered to right field to lead off the inning. Donaldson's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth gave UIndy another insurance run. Rubner doubled with two outs in the ninth but DU could not get the tying run to the plate.

Carson Fischer (1-3) was not helped out by his defense in the first inning, but managed to get length out of his start. He went five innings and allowed 11 hits and four earned runs. He walked and struck out three batters. Jared Schwartz got some work out of the bullpen and tossed three innings allowing two hits and one earned run. He fanned six and walked two.

Seth Spencer (2-0) earned the win for the Greyhounds going five innings and striking out nine. Wyatt Phillips got his second save of the season going the final two innings with no walks and four strikeouts. The teams will conclude their weekend series with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 11 AM.
