WHEELING, W. Va. - The Davenport men's lacrosse team have been knocking on the door for a win and broke through on Friday afternoon with a 12-11 win at Wheeling in non-conference action. After dropping three games this season by one goal, it was good to see the script flipped for the Panthers (2-5).
They were able to build a healthy lead in the third quarter, but Wheeling did not fold and battled back down six goals at 11-5. Wheeling scored four straight goals from the last minute in the third into the fourth quarter at the 8:26 mark.
Davenport got a goal from
James Johnston at the 3:12 mark to make it a 12-9 lead. They then needed to hold on as Wheeling scored at 2:40 and again with 14 seconds left to make it very interesting.
Lucas Renzetti had a great day in the face-off circle and won it with a ground ball pick by
Brody Baker to run out the remaining seconds. Renzetti finished 16-of-22 which had been the achilles heel over the last few defeats. Renzetti also led the team with seven ground balls.Â
The scoring came from
Keelan McKouen with a team-high four goals. He also had one assist and 7-of-8 shots were not target. Johnston and
Trevor McDonald each had three goals. Johnston also had two assists and 6-of-8 shots were on net.
Dylan Day and
Jayden Ashley also scored for the Panthers while Ashley led the team with four assists.
The Panthers once again used
Chase Fisher and
Daniel Milano in net. Fisher started and played the first half with six saves. Milano finished up in the second half and made seven saves. DU led Wheeling 29-24 in shots on goal and neither team could take advantage of their man-up opportunities as DU was 0-for-7 and Wheeling was 0-for-8. The team is off until March 25 when they welcome Walsh for a 2 PM contest.
