Fifth-Seeded Panthers Set for Day One of GLIAC Tournament

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -  Finishing the regular season with a 7-15 record in GLIAC play, the Davenport softball team enters the conference tournament as the No. 5 seed. The Panthers are set to matchup against No. 2 seed Saginaw Valley State in round one on Thurdsay at the Stadium at the Parkway Bank Sports in Rosemont, Ill. at 2:30 p.m. (EST). The tournament is double elimination and all teams are guaranteed to play at least two games (Thursday and Friday).


Player Notes:
Gabby Palazzolo
  • Became the program's all-time career hits leader in a 9-1 win over Wayne State last week (April 26).
Hayley Kreiger
  • Hit a natural cycle last time out against Purdue Northwest, marking the first cycle recorded in school history
  • Off the heels of a GLIAC Player of the Week performance, ending the week batting a conference-high .682 (15-for-22)
Becca Daoust
  • The Toledo transfer is in the midst of her best stretch of play, as she has recorded a hit in six straight games, scoring in five of those.
  • In a doubleheader against Parkside last week (April 28) she finished batting 6-for-8 with three runs through two games played.

About the Cardinals:
For the second consecutive season, Saginaw Valley State has ended the year No. 2 in the regular season GLIAC standings. The Cardinals ended the regular season with a 5-4 victory over Ferris State on April 29 in University Center, Mich. 

Alexis Gills is the top offensive threat for SVSU, batting nearly .400 (48-for-121) with nine doubles, two triples, three home runs, 24 RBIs, and 31 runs. The Cardinals also return two other First Team All-GLIAC performers from a season ago, Sara Moos and Jackie Popko. Popko earned GLIAC Player of the Week honors in week nine (April 17).

In the circle, Emily Depew leads Saginaw Valley State with 13 wins on the season, pitching 136 innings with a team-high 102 strikeouts and a 1.65 ERA. Earned week seven GLIAC player of the week honors after leading the Cardinals to a pair of victories, throwing 17 strikeouts through the two games and posting an ERA of 2.44. Depew earned First Team All-GLIAC honors in the 2022 season.

Depending on the results of day one, the Panthers will play either No. 1 seed GVSU or No. 6 seed Parkside on day two (Friday) of the tournament,
