Panthers overcome Northwood 2-1 ahead of road trip

Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - In a showing of confidence and resilience, the Davenport men's soccer team defended their home pitch against Northwood University in a 2-1 victory to mark their first of the season.

Although DU was unable to strike on six of their shot attempts in the first half, the Panthers seemingly controlled the pace throughout, allowing just one shot on goal that was saved by freshman goalkeeper Tommy Farrell who saw his first career start.

Sophomore forward Andrew Dykstra would be the first to strike for DU (53') off an assist from sophomore midfielder Cam Power to tally his second goal of the season, 1-0. However, a costly foul called on the Panthers inside of the box would allow for Northwood's Oliver Jarvis to knot the scoreline at 1-1 moments later just inside of the 58th minute.

20 minutes and four yellow cards later, the Panthers would strike back after a poor cross attempt by the Timberwolves in their territory created a one-on-one situation between sophomore forward Vitalis Takawira Jr. and keeper Robert Gjelaj; Takawira coming out on top and lacing the back of the net just past the 81st minute and marking his third goal this year to secure DU's first victory.

The win extended the all-time series record to 8-4-1 against the Timberwolves to mark DU's fourth win in the last five matchups, while pushing the Panthers season record to 1-1-2 overall.

DU will head back on the road against Northern Michigan next Friday, Sept. 15 with kickoff at 12 p.m.
