Box Score QUINCY, Ill. - The opening game of a four-game weekend series at Quincy saw the Hawks earn their first win of the season (1-7) with a 5-1 victory over Davenport (2-7) in Midwest Region action. It was the first meeting between the schools since the 2022 Midwest Regional tournament hosted by Davenport. Quincy won for the third straight time over the Panthers after two wins coming in that regional back in 2022.
With both teams searching for a big win early in the season, the Hawks turned to Griffin Kirn on the mound and he did not disappoint with 11 strikeouts and five hits allowed in 6.1 innings to get the victory. Quincy got to DU starter
Carson Fischer in the first inning with two runs as JD Ortiz had a RBI single and Joe Huffman followed with another RBI single, both with two outs for a 2-0 lead. The Hawks scored on a passed ball in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead.
Austin Simpson then got to work for Quincy with a solo home run in the third and again in the seventh for a 5-0 advantage. The Panthers pushed across their run in the top of the eighth as
Jared Evans was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and
Josh Robinson scored. Davenport had their chances but stranded 11 runners on base compared to six for the Hawks.
Robinson coming off his GLIAC Player of the Week honor on Monday, did not slow down going 3-for-5 with a double and run scored. DU managed six hits total as
Anthony Aloisio had a single and
Xander Reisbig and
Tyler Mosher each had a double. Fischer went seven innings in his longest outing of the season and all five runs allowed were earned. He walked two and struck out eight Hawks.
Zach Hopman threw one relief inning and allowed just one walk.
The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow (March 2) starting at 1 PM ET at QU Baseball Stadium.
