Preview: Panthers Prep for Four-Game Weekend

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Set for its third and fourth doubleheaders in a six-day span, the Davenport University softball team has four games this weekend. The Panthers will host No. 18 Grand Valley State on Saturday (April 20) at 1 p.m. before traveling to University Center, Mich. to take on Saginaw Valley State at noon.

Last time out, Becca Daoust notched her first career home run against Parkside on Thursday (April 18). In game two of the doubleheader, she finished with two hits, two runs and two RBIs. The Jackson, Mich. native leads the squad in stolen bases (11), while ranking second in batting average (.328) and hits (39).

About the Lakers
  • Coming off a sweep over SVSU, who is tied for No. 1 in the conference standings.
  • Finished their 2023 campaign 48-8 with a 20-1 record in GLIAC action, finishing as the regular season conference champions. GVSU advanced to the National Championship series but fell to North Georgia, 7-3, 3-0 to end their season.
  • The top returner for the Lakers is Morgan Spicer, who was a First Team All-GLIAC performer last season.
  • GVSU also returns Eliana Eiland, Kelsey Komorous, Ashley Platek, Hannah Hollister and Megan Koenigshof, all of whom received All-GLIAC recognition in 2023.
  • So far through 2024, Hollister has emerged as the top offensive threat for Grand Valley State batting .373, ranking seventh in the conference. She also leads the GLIAC in stolen bases with 28. She was also named GLIAC Player of the Week in week six.
  • The Lakers have depth in the circle, with four different pitchers posting an ERA lower than 2.0. Nevaeh Ingram leads the team with a perfect 6-0 record, while Genesis Eggart has a team-high 66 strikeouts.

About the Cardinals
  • Entering the weekend tied for No. 1 in the GLIAC standings with Purdue Northwest.
  • Last season, the Cards went 37-16 overall while posting a 14-7 record in GLIAC play. SVSU won the GLIAC postseason tournament, making the NCAA Division II Regionals for the second straight season.
  • They returned five All-GLIAC selections from last year's squad.
  • Senior pitcher Emily Depew earned back-to-back GLIAC Pitcher of the Week honors in weeks seven and eight. She leads the conference in strikeouts (124) while ranking second in wins (12). 
  • Ella Reifschneider leads the Cards' offense in 2024. The freshman bats a team-high .372 (42-for-113).
  • Maddie Campagna and Sydney Herioux have each earned GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors.
