DU erupts for 39 runs in doubleheader sweep over Parkside

The Panthers have now won four in a row for their best win streak of the season

KENOSHA, Wis. - The bats were red hot on Saturday as the Davenport baseball team scored 39 runs in a doubleheader sweep over Parkside. The Panthers scored a season-high 20 runs and allowed just six runs in game one and then nearly matched it in game two with a 19-8 victory over the Rangers. Davenport picked up their fourth straight win to set a season high for a win streak and will play Parkside one more time tomorrow at 2 PM ET in Grayslake, Ill. at the College of Lake County Baseball Field.

The Panthers scored their 20 runs in game one on 14 hits and were aided by six Ranger errors. Davenport opened up the game with five runs in the top of the second inning and six more in the top of the third inning. The final dagger came in the seventh inning when DU scored eight times.

Coltrane Rubner gave DU the lead for good in that second inning with a two-run home run to right which also plated Anthony Aloisio. Tyler Mosher reached on a fielder's choice and had a RBI and Michael Tchavdarov had a RBI single as the lead grew to 5-1. The Rangers scored in the bottom of the second courtesy of an error but then took an 11-2 lead in the top half of the third. Aloisio had a solo home run to left followed by Mosher with a RBI single through the right side. Connor Hnilo drove in two runs on a single through the left side and then Josh Robinson smacked a double down the left field line which scored two more for a 11-2 lead.

Logan Todd had a RBI single in the sixth inning and Mosher delivered a RBI single in the seventh. Tchavdarov drove in two runs on a single through the right side and a third run scored on the play due to a throwing error from right field. Rubner drove in the final three runs on a double to right center for the 20-6 final outcome. Rubner drove in a season-high five runs going 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Tchavdarov went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Mosher drove in three runs and also scored three times. Tyler McKinstry (1-3) went four innings and allowed five hits and three earned runs. He also walked three and struck out six in 80 pitches.

The second game provided the same fireworks by the Panthers as they scored their 19 runs on 14 hits and again were aided by five Ranger errors. Robinson went 2-for-3 with a double, sacrifice fly, four runs scored, and four RBI. He drove in the game's first run in the first inning with a ground-rule double down the right field line and later scored on a groundout by Aloisio.

Robinson gave DU a 5-0 lead in the second inning with a two-run single through the right side. The runs just kept pouring in with four of them in the third, three in the sixth, three in the seventh, and four in the eighth. Tchavdarov, Robinson, and Rubner each had a double and there were a season-high four sacrifice flies coming from Hnilo, Robinson, Rubner, and Xander Reisbig. DU drew a season-high 15 walks in the contest. Rubner and Reisbig also were credited with three RBI apiece. Jerad Berkenpas (4-2) went seven innings on the hill and gave up six earned runs with no walks and a strikeout. He got 14 flyouts and six groundouts in 97 pitches. Isaac Van Dyke pitched a scoreless eighth inning and allowed no hits. Zach Hopman tossed one inning in the ninth and allowed one run with two walks and a punchout.
