Preview: DU Looks to Finish Regular Season Strong

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Heading into the final weekend of the regular season, the Davenport University softball team has a pair of doubleheaders against Parkside and Purdue Northwest. The four games will have major implications for the postseason conference tournament, which takes place on the first weekend of May.

The top six teams make it into the GLIAC tournament, leaving Parkside, Wayne State and Davenport fighting for the No. 5 and 6 positions this weekend.

Series Record: Davenport leads 12-7
Last Meeting: UWP defeated DU 11-6 in Caledonia, Mich.
  • Conclude their season on Saturday (April 27) at Grand Valley State.
  • They return two All-GLIAC performers from a season ago, Mia Johnson (First Team) and Cassie Rutledge (Second Team).
  • Johnson is coming off a GLIAC Player of the Week selection while ranking third in the GLIAC in hits (55) on the year. The sophomore is also third in the league in runs batted in (40).
  • Rutledge earned GLIAC Player of the Week honors in week three (March 4). She also ranks fourth in the conference in hits with 54 on the season.
  • As a team, the Rangers lead the conference in doubles (72) and triples (15).
Purdue Northwest (27-19, 12-8 GLIAC)
Series Record: Purdue Northwest leads 11-10
Last meeting: PNW defeated DU 2-0 in Hammond, Ind.
About the Pride
  • No. 7 in the NCAA Midwest Regional rankings.
  • Will play Grand Valley State the day prior (Friday, April 26) in Allendale, Mich.
  • Selena Michko and Maddison Roop are the top returners for PNW, both earning First Team All-GLIAC honors a season ago. Michko also earned All-Region honors from both the D2CCA and the NFCA last year. 
  • Roop was named GLIAC Player of the Week (week 4) and is second in the league in strikeouts (119) and wins (14).
  • Michiko leads the GLIAC in home runs (eight).
  • Freshman Kylie Dugan was named week one and four GLIAC Player of the Week. She also leads the conference in batting average (.493).
  • As a team, PNW leads the conference in hits (380).
