MIDLAND, Mich. - Ella Baryo and
Tyler Guggemos helped to start Davenport University cross country on the right note with top-five individual finishes in the Northwood Invitational women's 5K and men's 6K, the Panthers securing second (men's) and fifth (women's) overall for team placement.
"Our team had a good day today. We had a race plan and executed it very well," said head coach
Scott Cook. "This meet will set us up well for the next few meets to be able to compete at a high level.
Ella Baryo set a school record for the XC 5000m, and
Tyler Guggemos set a school record for the XC 6000m distance."
Baryo's third-place finish was one of many strong finishes for DU overall. Alivia Lamborne and Alyssa Butterfield were in the top 50 runners in 33rd and 41st, respectively, as Kaylen Clark (52nd), Zoe Zawacki (81st), and Kayleigh Kuhse (91st) rounded out the other competing Panthers - Clark and Butterfield seeing their first action at the collegiate level.
With Guggemos (fifth) and Garrett Melling (ninth) finishing in the top 10 of the men's leaderboards, DU's strong finish was also backed by Jacob Dennis (12th), Drew Sharrar (16th), Nikolas Shilling (17th), Rogan Melling (18th), and Jordan Domany (28th).
