Final Countdown: Davenport Looks to Finish Strong in Closing GLIAC Weekend

CALEDONIA, Mich. — With just two GLIAC matchups remaining, Davenport University looks to finish the regular season strong as the Panthers travel to Saginaw Valley State on Oct. 29 before returning home to host St. Cloud State on Nov. 2.

Following a split weekend that included a 1-0 victory over Purdue Northwest and a 1-0 loss to Roosevelt, goalkeeper Beau Hudd tallied seven saves while facing 29 shots and allowing just one goal. Maxamillian Postlewait found the back of the net against Purdue Northwest, marking his third goal of the season.

Freshman Charlie Davis continues to make a strong offensive impression, leading the team with 41 shots — ranking second in the GLIAC — with 21 of those on target, placing him third in the conference. Trailing closely behind Davis are Drew Matyunas with 24 shots and Aidan Orth with 21. Davis and Ruan Sheffer lead the Panthers in scoring with four goals apiece.

Davenport currently sits in fifth place in the GLIAC standings, trailing Northern Michigan by four conference points and narrowly ahead of St. Cloud State and Purdue Northwest — making the next two games crucial for postseason positioning.

Saginaw Valley State Matchup
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Robert C. Braddock Field in University Center, Mich., where the Panthers will look to bounce back against the Cardinals after falling 2-0 in their previous meeting on Sept. 24.

Dating back to their NAIA days in 2008, Saginaw Valley State leads the all-time series 16-5-3. The Cardinals, also entering their final week of conference play, will face St. Cloud State on Oct. 31. Sitting second in the GLIAC standings, SVSU holds a 7-2-1 conference record, just one loss behind first-place Roosevelt.

The Cardinals have been a force offensively, leading the GLIAC in total shots (261) and shots on goal (120), while also topping the conference in points (84), goals (28), assists (28), and goals-against average (0.71).
Players to watch include Matty Telfer, who leads the team with 37 shots, six goals, and 16 points, and Evan Baker, who has contributed 31 shots. In goal, Nick Kay has started all 14 matches, collecting 30 saves with a goals-against average of 0.71.

St. Cloud State Matchup
The Panthers hold a 7-1-2 advantage in the all-time series against St. Cloud State, with their only loss coming earlier this season in a 1-0 defeat on Sept. 26. Davenport will look to even the season series with home-field advantage on Nov. 2 at 11 a.m. in Caledonia.

This matchup carries major postseason implications, as St. Cloud State trails Davenport by just four conference points. The Huskies enter the weekend with a 4-10-1 overall record and a 2-8-0 GLIAC mark.

Andres Garcia and Owen Worsdell lead the Huskies offensively with 24 shots each, while Garcia paces the team with five goals and Worsdell follows with four. In net, Ramy Atia has faced 180 shots, recording 59 saves and a goals-against average of 1.84.
