GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The men's tennis team picked up a pair of wins on Friday and Saturday at the Grand Rapids Racquet Club. They won both matches 6-1 with a win over Goshen on Friday and over Roosevelt in GLIAC action on Saturday.
The Panthers got their 12th win of the season over Goshen in non-conference action. Goshen, a member of the NAIA, was playing Davenport for the first time in program history. DU got the doubles point courtesy of wins at the two and three spots. Both were 6-4 decisions as
Daniel Calver teamed up with
Rudiger Dusselberg at two and
Carlos Henriquez formed a duo with
Jose Brenes at three.
Simone Pacciolla got a win at first singles over Timo Novak and it was his second win at one singles this season. Calver at two singles needed a tiebreak in the first set (7-6, 5) and then finished it out 6-2 against Filippo Gallo.
Reuben Bakker got a win at three singles also needing a tiebreaker in the first set (7-6, 3) before closing out the match at 7-5. Bakker is now 10-5 in that position this season.
Henriquez at four singles had no trouble at 6-1, 6-3 against Bruno Ferrera. Dusselberg at five singles earned the 7-5, 6-2 win over Denis Stanculov. Dusselberg has a team-high 15 singles wins this season.
Davenport improved to 13-4 overall and got their first conference win of the season on Saturday against Roosevelt. It was the first meeting all-time between the schools. The Panthers won all three in doubles play. Pacciolla and Bakker won 6-1 at the one spot over Victor Dorojan and Filip Stojanoski. Calver and Dusselberg at two doubles won 6-3 against Justus Peters and Enzo Soares. Henriquez and Brenes at three doubles won 6-2 against Demille Scarbello and Lakshay Vivek.
Davenport took five of the six singles matches. The victories included Pacciolla, Calver, Bakker, Henriquez, and Dusselberg.
