CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport baseball team won their eighth straight GLIAC game and improved to 12-1 in the conference with a 14-6 win over Saginaw Valley State on Thursday afternoon. The Panthers took a 17-16 edge in the all-time series and cruised to the win behind 14 hits and a strong pitching performance by
Keegan Batka.
Batka improved to 7-1 this season and increased his GLIAC strikeout lead to 72 on the season with nine punchouts in 6.1 innings. He tossed five scoreless innings to start the game before the Cardinals could get on the board in the sixth. Austin Cicerone had a one-out RBI triple to right center and Batka stranded him at third. SVSU then scored two more runs in the seventh as Batka pitched to four batters and gave up a walk and two singles.
Brayden Flanders inherited the bases loaded with one out and got an infield fly for the second out. Ryan Jarvis then drew a walk to plate a run and Flanders hit Cicerone with a pitch for another run.
Chase Raymond took the loss for SVSU falling to 4-2 on the mound. He lasted five innings and yielded six runs on 10 hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Ryan Adams took over in the sixth and did not record an out. He gave up two hits, two walks, and five earned runs after a
Dylan Pawenski grand slam to left center. It was the first grand slam of the season for Davenport and gave Pawenski five RBI on the day. He became the third Panther to drive in five runs in a game this season.
The Panthers collected five doubles to go with the grand slam by Pawenski.
Xander Reisbig had one of those doubles and went 3-for-5 with three RBI.
Coltrane Rubner drove in two runs and scored twice with a double and sacrifice bunt.
Cody Hultink went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a double, and a sacrifice bunt.
Logan Todd went 2-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored and a RBI.
The weekend series continues tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 1 PM.
