GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Jeremy Bultema has been hired as the head coach of the men's ACHA Division I hockey program. He will take over the duties previously held by Phil Sweeney. Bultema is no stranger to the hockey programs at Davenport. He has recently served as the lead assistant coach for the ACHA Division I program over the past five seasons.
"I am excited to see Jeremy transition from assistant to head coach of our top program," said Ryan McCosky, Director of Non-Varsity Sports and Programming. "Jeremy is a natural leader and will demand a lot from these young men. His experience and knowledge of our athletic department and hockey programs set him apart in the interview process."
Bultema was earlier the head coach of the ACHA men's Division III hockey program at Davenport for three seasons (2014-17) and also served as an assistant coach with the ACHA Division II team under Chris Green from 2011-14.
Bultema has also served as head coach of the Caledonia/Lowell varsity hockey team since 2022. The team had a very successful season in 2024-25, in which they posted a 18-7-1 record.
"I was thrilled when Jeremy and I talked about the possibility of him taking over our top men's hockey program. I selected Jeremy as my captain in 2007-2008 when I coached Davenport's hockey team. He has a unique ability to get the best out of his team. His military background and passion for hard work will be a driving force to put Davenport hockey back among the top teams in the ACHA. I am grateful for the over 20 years Phil Sweeney has been part of our hockey program. He has been an amazing coach, an awesome member of our athletic department, and a great friend," said Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Paul Lowden.
Bultema had a standout career for the ACHA Division II team, where he served as captain for two seasons and led the Panthers to their first-ever ACHA National Championship in 2007-08.
"Davenport Hockey has been a part of my life since I first wore the jersey in 2005," said Bultema. "This program holds a special place in my heart, and I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to lead it as Head Coach. I will focus on building a strong culture, developing our student-athletes, and doing things the right way. I'm excited for the journey ahead and committed to helping this program move forward with pride and purpose."
