CHICAGO, Ill. - The Davenport baseball team split a doubleheader on Saturday at Roosevelt in a surprising outcome. The Panthers won game one 8-3 and led 3-0 in game two, but the Lakers rallied for the last five runs in a 5-3 comeback victory. The Lakers, by winning game two, keep their hopes alive of making the GLIAC Tournament. They are tied with Purdue Northwest at 5-18 in the conference for the sixth spot in the standings. Davenport currently is 36-13 overall and 20-3 in the GLIAC.
Adam Berghorst improved to 7-2 on the mound in game one. He threw all seven innings and allowed three runs on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Berghorst set his season high in innings pitched and did not allow a walk for the second time in a start this season. He has won won three of his last four starts and got a no-decision in the other one.
Left-hander Keagan Bobbitt fell to 2-6 on the season in the start for Roosevelt. He went five innings and allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Garrett Swan had a dandy of a game batting seventh in the lineup. He went 2-for-3 with two triples, two runs scored, and a team-high three RBI. He had a two-RBI triple in the second inning and had a RBI triple in the sixth.
Sam Clay stole a base and went 2-for-4 in the leadoff spot with a RBI.
Xander Reisbig had a double while going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Logan Todd had a pair of sacrifice bunts and a single with two RBI.
Davenport scored once in the first and twice in the second in game two, but could not score again as the Lakers rallied for four runs in the seventh and one insurance run in the eighth. Reisbig had a RBI double in the first and Clay had a RBI grounder, while
Michael Tchavdarov had a RBI double in the second.
Colton Blankstrom tossed six shutout innings in his longest outing of the season. He allowed just four hits with one walk and three strikeouts in the no-decision effort.
Aidan Arbaugh gave up four runs on three hits and recorded two outs before being lifted for
Brandon Skorupski. He has now given up an earned run in back-to-back appearances after four scoreless appearances before this. He yielded the run in the eighth and tossed 1.1 innings.
The Lakers got three scoreless innings out of their bullpen. William Zalabak was the first reliever and got the win (1-0). He retired the Panthers in order in the seventh inning. Kevin Schroer earned his fifth save of the season by getting the final out of the game on a flyout by
Justin Johnson. Davenport had five doubles in game two.
Chase Kemp had a pair of doubles and went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Coltrane Rubner led the team with three hits in five at-bats and doubled with a run scored.
The two teams will wrap up the regular season tomorrow at 12:00 PM ET.
