TAMPA, Fla. - The Davenport baseball team collected five hits and could not put a run on the board for the first time this season in a 4-0 loss at No. 3 Tampa on Friday night. The Spartans were able to score in each of the first three innings and that was enough.
Jake Books had a RBI single in the first inning. Gunnett Carlson drove home two runs in the second inning with a triple. Jesse Ponce concluded the scoring plays with a groundout to second in the third inning.
The pitchers had tremendous success and despite the loss, it was one of the better pitching performances for Davenport this season. Robert Satin, one of the best hurlers in Division II, improved to 6-0 on the mound by going seven innings and allowing just three hits. He walked two and struck out nine in a 92-pitch outing. Josiah Velazquez got the final two outs in the ninth as DU put runners on second and third with one out. Velazquez fanned pinch hitter
Ivan Salinas and
Aidan Arbaugh to end the game.
Sean Knorr (0-1) went five innings and allowed four runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
Brayden Flanders had three solid relief innings allowing one hit and no runs with three walks and a strikeout. No Panther had more than one hit in the box score and all five hits were singles.
Aiden Warn drew two walks and was hit by a pitch to reach base three times.
The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1:00 PM.
