Panthers Win Overtime Thriller to Advance to G-MAC Championship

MIDLAND, Mich. — The Davenport University men's lacrosse team edged Northwood with a 16-15 victory on Wednesday at Dean Field in the G-MAC Tournament Semifinals. Jayden Ashley scored the game-winning goal for the Panthers with one minute remaining in overtime.

The contest began with Noah Simonson and Owen Brown minding the nets for Davenport and Northwood, respectively. Davenport took an early lead with a goal from Dylan Fallon at 11:51, assisted by Charlie Fritz. Northwood quickly answered back with a goal by Drew Lockwood at 10:46, leveling the score. As the quarter progressed, Griffin Poll and Luke Fritz each scored for Davenport, with Fritz netting twice, one assisted by Tommy Becker. Despite Northwood's efforts, including a late goal by Dylan Ayotte with 54 seconds remaining, Davenport held a 5–3 advantage at the end of the quarter, capped by a last-minute goal from Luke Eichbauer.

The second quarter saw a flurry of activity as the Timberwolves surged back against Davenport. Logan Flaherty won the initial faceoff for Davenport, and Luke Eichbauer promptly scored at 12:59, extending their lead. Northwood responded, with Luke Ueland scoring at 11:54 to tighten the scoreline. MacKennan Tognetti's man-up goal at 7:42 brought Northwood closer, followed by a timeout from Davenport. Despite a goal by Dylan Fallon assisted by Charlie Fritz at 6:32, Northwood's Andrew Rogers scored twice, including at 3:46, to level the score. Northwood pulled ahead with Payton Allaire's goal at 2:55, ending the quarter with an 8–7 lead over Davenport.

The third quarter featured a back-and-forth scoring battle between Davenport and NU. Luke Eichbauer notched a goal for Davenport at 11:20, marking his 47th of the season, followed by Charlie Fritz adding another at 8:47. Northwood responded with Drew Lockwood's goal at 8:16, assisted by Ryder Mulvey, and later a man-up goal by Mulvey himself with an assist from Tognetti at 7:44. Rogers contributed two goals for Northwood during this quarter, with his second coming at 3:08. Davenport regained momentum with goals from Fallon, assisted by Fritz, and another from Eichbauer, assisted by Jayden Ashley, to tie the score at 12–12. The quarter concluded with a last-minute goal by Will Bjork, assisted by Fritz, ensuring the teams were level entering the final quarter.

Davenport and Northwood engaged in a tightly contested fourth quarter, with both teams exchanging goals and defensive stops. Fritz opened the scoring for Davenport with a goal at 13:49, assisted by Griffin Poll, marking his 30th of the season. Northwood's Tognetti quickly responded with a goal at 11:31, assisted by Payton Allaire. Despite multiple turnovers and missed shots, Davenport regained the lead with Jackson Kain's goal at 8:57, his first of the season. Eichbauer extended Davenport's lead to 15–13 with a goal at 5:31. Northwood fought back, and Mulvey scored with 1:14 remaining to level the score at 15–15. The quarter ended with the teams deadlocked, setting up a dramatic conclusion.

Davenport secured a narrow 16–15 victory over the Timberwolves, with the decisive play occurring in overtime. After a faceoff violation granted possession to Davenport, a series of turnovers and ground ball recoveries ensued. At 1:01, Ashley scored his 75th goal of the season, breaking the deadlock and sending the Panthers to their first-ever G-MAC Tournament title game.
