Lowell, Mich. - In a day where Lowell celebrates lacrosse by having numerous games throughout, the Davenport Panthers used a strong first half to down Western Michigan 12-8 in their final game of the year. The Panthers finish the season at 11-2 after the nightcap victory at the Lowell Lacrosse Festival.
DU used a blitzing 23 shots in the opening period to jump out to a 6-3 lead. The Panthers would then increase the lead to five at intermission behind two goals by Adam Boonenberg and one from Jeff Heglund in the 2nd period to lead 9-4.
Jake Stricker was solid in goal for the opening 30 minutes as he turned away eight shots from the Broncos and eventually picked up the win in goal.
With Davenport leading by five at halftime, Western knew they had to come back fast and after the Panthers scored the opening goal of the second half to increase the lead to 6 (10-4), the Broncos scored three straight goals to bring the deficit to just three at the 11:00 mark of the 4th period. DU would respond though as Oliver Wade and Boonenberg would each add a goal late to seal the victory.
Davenport ends their inaugural season at 11-2 overall and will look to make this the foundation for the future. Head Coach Bob Clarkson will be bringing in a stellar recruiting class that will hopefully make an immediate impact as Davenport could see themselves chasing after a conference crown.
