DENVER, Colo. - A strong fourth quarter lifted the Panthers to a 12-10 victory over Emory College in today's National Quarterfinals. The win vaults Davenport into the semifinals on Friday where they will take on #2 St. Thomas.
In their first ever appearance at the MCLA D-2 National Championships, the Panthers started off with a bang as they took a quick 4-0 lead less than 9:00 into the game. Jordy Sayers got things started at the 12:28 mark and he was quickly followed by two more goals by Jordan Richtsmeier and Shawn Beer.
The Panthers would add their final goal of the first quarter when Beer connected with Fabian Morales with just 6:22 remaining. Unfortunately that would be all of the scoring for Davenport for quite some time as Emory ran off the next five goals of the game over the next 13:00 to take a 5-4 lead.
Davenport did strike even just before halftime and get a renewed sense of energy when Oliver Wade scored with just 1:47 on the clock in the opening half and the goal sent the game into halftime locked at 5 goals each.
The third quarter proved to be a thrilling one as the action went back and forth but after DU took the lead on a goal from Dylan Gilbert, Emory scored the next two for a 7-6 lead. The Panthers recoverd however to score two of the final three of the quarter to make it 8-8 heading into the final 15 minutes.
That was when the Panthers showed their grit as they scored the next four goals to take a commanding 12-8 lead. DU got their scoring from Chad Anguilm, Shawn Beer (2) and Jordy Sayers.
Two late goals in the last 1:30 of the game made things somewhat interesting down the stretch but DU held on for the win and a berth in the National Semifinals.
Justin Scott got the win in goal as he came on strong in the final two quarters as he improves to 7-2 on the year.
Davenport will take on #2 St. Thomas on Friday at 11:00 MDT in the main stadium.
