PONTIAC, Mich. - The Davenport men's lacrosse team has opened its season with two impressive wins as they downed Oakland University 12-2 on Saturday before taking out Carthage today 12-8. DU will now travel to Atlanta over spring break for three games against Emory, Kennesaw and SCAD.
Friday night's game opened the 2010 season for the Panthers against the Grizzlies as Shawn Beer (Aurora, Ontario) picked up right where he left off in 2009 with four goals.
Also adding goals for the Panthers were Sam Carlson (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Jordy Sayers (Davison, Mich.) with two each while Oliver Wade (Burlington, Ontario), Grant Hamilton (Flint, Mich.) and Gavin Morris (Rockford, Mich.) each scored one.
Jake Stricker (Brighton, Mich.) got the start in net for the Panthers and finished with six saves while Zach Higgins (Courtice, Ontario) played the second half as he posted five saves.
The second game against Carthage was much closer as the Panthers prevailed 12-8.
The Panthers struggled from the get-go as they fell behind 6-4 after the first quarter. Zach Higgins then came into net and shut down Carthage allowing only two goals for the remainder of the game.
Oliver Wade finished the game with three goals and was 3/6 in his faceoff attempts while Gavin Morris recorded two goals and two ground balls.
Playing solidly in the midfield while collecting a total of eight ground balls were Sam Carlson and Brandon Peirsma (Grand Rapids, Mich.).
DU will travel to Atlanta, GA over spring break to take on national powers SCAD, Emory and Kennesaw State.
