After moving up to #2 in the MCLA D2 Polls, the Panthers opponents did not get any easier as they used a strong second half to down the #19 ranked Flying Dutchmen today at home. The win lifts DU to 6-0 on the year as they will host Dayton next Friday at Forest Hills Eastern HS.
DU, who defeated three top 18 teams last week in Atlanta, returned home and for the first time this season played on the friendly confines of the Turf Field.
The offense got off to a racing start as Davenport scored the game's first five goals behind three different players. Shawn Beer (Aurora, Ontario) scored twice as did Sam Carlson (Grand Rapids, Mich.). Lyle Parks (Troy, Mich.) added the other goal.
After Hope scored their first goal with less than four minutes to play in the opening quarter, the two teams traded goals with the Flying Dutchmen getting their second as the clock struck zero.
Hope made a good run in the second quarter as DU was battling penalty issues and HC got within 8-4 with just more than 8:00 to play in the half. DU did respond though and used two more goals from Shawn Beer and one each from Gavin Morris (Rockford, Mich.) and Oliver Wade (Davison, Mich.) to go up 12-6 at halftime.
Jake Stricker (Brighton, Mich.) ended the half with a total of five saves.
Davenport started the second half a little slow but after two goals from Hope got them within four, the Panthers ran off eight of the next nine goals to take a commanding 20-9 lead. Five different players for DU scored during the run highlighted by two each from Gavin Morris and Cody Cross (Grand Rapids, Mich.).
As the sun started to set with the fourth quarter just getting started, DU added two more goals from Morris and Jonathon Frank (Wallingford, Conn.) while allowing only two to go up 22-11. The two coaches and referees then met and decided to call the game with 8:32 remaining on the clock.
The win lifts DU to 6-0 on the year and they will host national power Dayton next Friday at Forest Hills Eastern HS. That game is scheduled for a 8:00 PM start under the lights in Ada.
