Three Unanswered 4th Period Goals Lift GVSU to 11-8 Win over #2 DU

Box Score BOX SCORE

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - In a highly anticipated CCLA matchup between #2 Davenport and #7 Grand Valley, it was the three unanswered fourth period goals that lifted the Lakers to the victory.  It marks the first time in three years that GVSU has defeated the Panthers and sends DU to 11-2 overall on the year.

GVSU got off to a strong start by scoring the opening goal at the 9:32 mark of the first period, but DU came right back with two straight goals from Shawn Beer (Aurora, Ontario) to take the 2-1 lead.

As good as the lead felt for the short time-frame, it would be the last of the game for the Panthers.  The Lakers responded with two straight goals of their own to lead 3-2 entering the second period.

Gavin Morris (Rockford, Mich.) then found the back of the net with 12:03 to play in the first half to tie by again GVSU countered with two consecutive goals.  Sam Carlson (Grand Rapids, Mich.) got DU within one but that would be as close as they would get for the first half as they went into the locker room trailing 7-6.

GVSU outshot the Panthers 20-15 and were 9/14 on the face-off to keep the edge on the offensive end.

The Lakers opened the second half with a goal to increase the margin back to two goals but the Panthers got solid offensive play from Sam Carlson and Shawn Beer with a goal each to tie the game heading into the fourth period.

GVSU again struck first but DU had numerous opportunities to tie the score but the Laker goaltender was up to the task stopping all three shots he faced on net during the 15 minutes.  The Lakers eventually added two more for the final outcome of 11-8 to seal the upset win.

Shawn Beer led DU with three goals as Sam Carlson and Gavin Morris each chipped in with two goals. Carlson also had three assists in the loss and led DU with six ground-balls.

Zach Higgins (Courtice, Ontario) took the loss in net to fall to 4-2 on the year as the Panthers are now 11-2 overall and 1-1 in CCLA action.  DU returns to action on Saturday when they take on Northern Michigan in a CCLA contest at the Lowell Lacrosse Festival.  Game time is set for 7:30 PM.
