Davenport Battles for 90-83 Victory Over #RV St. Thomas

MEMORIAL GARDENS, Fla. - The #11 Lady Panthers finished up their trip to Florida with a 90-83 victory over #RV St. Thomas. Karli Harris had a career high day with 19 points and Karlee Despres recorded a double double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. 

In a match-up against defending Sun Conference champion St. Thomas, Davenport rose to occasion and beat a team that was 11-4 on their home court last year. Davenport out rebounded the Bobcats 39/26 and shot 49% from the field compared to STU's 39%.

Right from the tip both teams traded baskets back and forth for the first five minutes with DU taking a 13-12 lead at the 14:10 mark off a Karli Harris layup. Davenport never trailed for the rest of the game and led by as many as 17 in the first half.

In the final minutes of the first half St. Thomas cut the DU lead down to just four but a layup by freshman Kia Frazier and a three pointer from Karlee Despres in the closing second gave the Panthers a 42-31 lead at the break.

In the second half DU held a 16 point led three different times but the Bobcats continued to fight cutting the deficit to nine with 3:30 remaining. After sitting out most of the second half with an ankle injury, Karli Harris re-entered the game and provided an offensive spark for the Panthers hitting a three followed by a two layups.

The junior ended with a game high and career high 19 points shooting 7-10 from the field while Carrie Grubius, Abby Neff and Karlee Despres all finished in double digits as well with 18, 12, and 11 points respectively.

The win against St. Thomas is the first one in program history as these two teams met for the first time today. Davenport will take a 4-1 recorded into their next game on Tuesday at Indiana University - Northwest. Game time is set for 7:00pm and can be heard live on "The Dan".

On the play that she injured her left ankle: “I was going up for a layup and just came down on the girls leg with forced me to land on the outside of my ankle. Initially when it happen I thought I would be unable to play the rest of the game."
 
On what sparked he return to the floor in the second half and her career points night: “The game was getting a little to close for comfort in the second half so I figured let's tape it and see what I can do and I'm pretty sure it was 100% just on adrenaline. As far as my scoring tonight i owe all the credit to my teammates. Their hard work allowed for most of my open shots and I was just happy that I could contribute this win today."

Davenport continued their streak of hitting one three pointer in a game to 305…When leading at halftime they are 193-20 overall…Karli Harris' 19 points is a new career high after hitting 15 last season and Despres' double-double is her second of the season
