GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Fresh off a pair of victories by a combined score of 44-4, the Davenport men's lacrosse team will take its shot at the best the SELC has to offer over spring break. DU will take on Elon, Emory and Tennessee Wesleyan in their annual trip to Georgia and Tennessee.
DU Men's lacrosse heads south for their spring break to take on the SELC as they will cover three states in four days. After decisive wins over Aquinas and Northwood in Pontiac, the DU men's lacrosse team takes on the best the SELC has to offer. This will be a great opportunity to gage the direction the team is heading, according to head coach Bob Clarkson. The Panthers are still working out some kinks but are looking forward to the chance of playing strong competition.
Elon qualified for the National Championship last season while Tennessee Wesleyan just narrowly missed the at large bid for the SELC. Emory has consistently been among the top teams over the years making it to nationals in recent years.
The team is looking forward to game time weather sunny and in the 60's and 70's. This is a far cry from the snow and low temps in Michigan. The lone bad day for weather will be on Tuesday when they play Elon in North Carolina. Temperature is forecasted in the 60's with rain.
Davenport opens the three-game trip on Saturday, February 19 when they travel to Tennessee Wesleyan for a 2:00pm matchup. The contest features a couple of strong players in # 19 Joel Gossner, and # 16 Ryan Horvath. who led the scoring for Tennessee Wesleyan last year with 5.7 points per game. Both are senior attackmen as Ryan's younger brother Parker Horvath signed with DU this spring.
The game vs. TWC will be broadcast live on internet video and can be found by the link above.
The second game of the trip takes the Panthers to Emory on Sunday, February 20 at 3:00pm. Emory features returning middies Mark Erickson (SR) and Eric Brandel (JR). Brandel will likely be the biggest threat having scored 5.1 pts per game last year but Erickson is not far behind though having averaging 4.2 points per game.
Elon will be the final opponent on February 22 at 5:00 and is a team with a well balanced offense. They spread the scoring evenly as they are lead by junior midfielder Colin Madden.
All three games should be close competition and will let all teams know where they stand. Live stats will be provided for each game on www.dupanthers.com
