ATHENS, Tenn. – The Davenport Men's Lacrosse Team opened its South East Lacrosse Conference (SELC) trip with a 19-6 win over Tennessee Wesleyan in Athens, Tennessee on Saturday. The MCLA preseason poll had the Bulldogs ranked 17th in the country. The win improves the Panthers to 3-0 on the season. Davenport will next be in action on Sunday when they take on Emory University.
Davenport led 4-0 after the first quarter and expanded the lead to 13-1 at the half. By the end of the 3rd quarter DU led 16-4 with many reserves seeing action. The Panthers scored 3 in the 4th to end the contest.
Davenport spread the offensive production around with eight Panthers scoring goals. Sophomore Jordan Richtsmeier (Grand Rapids, Mich.)led all scorers in points (11) with 4 goals and 7 assists while Freshman Dominic Boggiano (Grand Rapids, Mich.)added 7 goals and 2 assists. Junior Zach Higgins (Courtice, Ontario)played all 60 minutes between the pipes and recorded 12 saves on the day. Davenport's clear was working well clearing the ball 25 of 32 chances (78%).
The Panthers held the Bulldogs to 1 for 4 (25%) in Man Up situations while Davenport was 6 for 13 in the extra man opportunities (46%).
“The defense is performing very well,” said Head Coach Bob Clarkson. Davenport is holding opponents to an average of 3.33 goals per game. “The defense will be key to a successful playoff run,” added Clarkson.
Davenport will travel to Atlanta, Ga. to take on Emory University on Sunday for a 3:00 PM start time. The Panthers get Monday off before taking on pre-season No. 9 Elon University on Tuesday in Elon, N.C.
