ELON, N.C. - The No. 3 ranked Davenport men's lacrosse team picked up their biggest win of the season on Tuesday afternoon as they defeated No. 9 Elon in a showdown of two of the Top 10 teams in the MCLA. DU got a pair of goals from
Shawn Beer Jordy Sayers and
Oliver Wade as six different players scored for the Panthers.
Davenport entered their matchup with No. 9 Elon having defeated their previous four opponents by a combined score of 80-15 and had not been tested by a top tier team. Elon came out of the gate hot and scored the first goal just 1:59 into the contest.
The Panthers however scored the three goals from
Jordy Sayers (Davison, Mich.),
Oliver Wade (Burlington, Ontario) and
Sam Carlson (Grand Rapids, Mich.) to lead 3-1 until Elon got a late goal to make the score 3-2 after 15 minutes of play.
Davenport kept up the attack ealry in the second as Beer scored his first goal of the season but the host team came back with two straight at 7:15 and 6:18 to tie the score at 4-4. DU would not be fazed though and got tallies from Wade and
Cody Cross (Grand Rapids, Mich.) to take a 6-4 lead heading into the locker room for halftime.
Defense then became a huge story for both teams in the third but Davenport did manage to get one more goal on the board as
Jordy Sayers (Davison, Mich.) recorded his second of the game to lead 7-4. Two more goals to open the final period for DU opened up a 9-4 lead and Davenport cruised from there.
Two out of the last three goals were scored by Elon to make the score 10-6 as the final buzzer sounded but not before Davenport improved to 5-0 on the year.
DU will next be in action in their first home game of the year on Saturday, March 12 when they take on Indiana Tech in a 3:00 matchup.
