ALLENDALE, Mich. – No. 2 Davenport fell to No. 1 Grand Valley State Thursday night 16-5. The Lakers got out to an early lead and Davenport wouldn't be able to recover. The Panthers will return home to take on Northern Michigan Saturday night.
Grand Valley took control early but Davenport's defense and goaltending held strong in the opening minutes to keep the game scoreless. Grand Valley got the first goal of the game with 8:25 remaining in the first quarter. The Lakers opened the game up with 3 more goals in the next 3 minutes to increase their lead to 4-0. Gavin Morris (Rockford, Mich.) scored with an assist by Shawn Beer (Aurora, Ontario) with 1:25 remaining in the first quarter to get Davenport on the board.
Grand Valley opened the second quarter scoring with a goal 9 minutes in. Davenport and Grand Valley exchanged a couple goals in the last 4 minutes and a goal by GVSU with 1 second left in the half gave the Lakers a 8-3 lead heading into halftime. Davenports goals were by Jordan Richtsmeier (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Sam Carlson (Grand Rapids, Mich.).
Grand Valley continued to dominate the Panthers in the third quarter scoring the first two goals before Davenport got on the board with a goal by Same Carlson, his second of the game. The Lakers closed out the period with two more goals to take a 12-4 lead into the final period.
Cody Cross (Grand Rapids, Mich.) scored with 2:40 remaining in the game for Davenport but the Panthers were outscored 4-1 in the fourth in the 16-5 loss.
The Panthers were dominated in most categories in the loss. Grand Valley had a 14-10 advantage in face-offs and got 12 more ground balls than Davenport. Davenport has lost 3 of their last 4 games against Grand Valley but defeated them last year in the National Tournament.
Davenport will return home on Saturday night to take on Northern Michigan at 7:00 PM.
