GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Both Davenport tennis teams picked up conference win over Indiana Tech on Friday night. The men solidified a third place finish in conference with the 7-2 win over the warriors while the women moved into tie for second with Aquinas after a dominating 9-0 victory over Indiana Tech. The men are back in action on Saturday in the GRCC Quad while the women can clinch second place in conference with a win against Aquinas on Wednesday.
Victor Roland (Natal, Brazil) and Jeff Karasinski (Grand Rapids, Mich.) got the Panthers off to a early lead taking their doubles match 8-4. Vitaly Schumilov (Togliatti, Russia) and Matt Weiden (Kentwood, Mich.) increased the DU lead to 2-0 when they defeated the second doubles team 8-5. Davenport third doubles team of Eric Pell (Caledonia, Mich.) and Tyler Chambers (Rockford, Mich.) had an early lead but fell 8-6. Davenport had a 2-1 lead through the doubles matches.
In the first singles match, Jeff Karasinski fell 7-5, 6-4 to tie the match at 2-2. Indiana Tech, however, would not be able to win another game. At number one singles, Victor Roland fought off three match points and eventually won the third set 7-5. The four other singles for Davenport won in straight sets to take the match 7-2 and to capture third place in conference.
The women's team dominated Indiana Tech throughout the match. The doubles team of Diana Favela (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) and Denisse Favela (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) won 8-1. The team of Stephanie Fortney (Allegan, Mich.) and Erin Hossack (Dearborn, Mich.) emerged with a 8-4 victory while Davenport's third doubles of Kristi Kuzdal (Grandville, Mich.) and Kelly Todd (Grand Rapids, Mich.) won 8-2. Davenport entered singles play with a 3-0 lead.
The Panthers didn't waste any time in the singles matches. Diana Favella, Denisse Favella and Kelly Todd each won their match 6-1, 6-0. Stephanie Fortney and Kristi Kuzdal both dropped only two games in their straight set wins. Erin Hossack made quick work of her match winning 6-0, 6-0. The 9-0 win moved the Panthers into a tie for second with a chance to take sole possession of second with a win against Aquinas on Wednesday.
The men are back in action on Saturday in the GRCC Quad. They have two more matches before the conference tournament next weekend. The women take on Aquinas on Wednesday before the conference tournament.
